Chicken and waffles have to be one of my favorite things. Fried chicken? Fluffy waffles? Syrup? What’s not to love?! It’s revolutionary, actually, that someone decided it shouldn’t be shameful to douse your proteins in syrup. Imagine my immense joy when entire restaurants devoted to the dish began to surface. One such place called King Daddy’s Chicken and Waffles recently opened at 444 Haywood Road in West Asheville. It’s brought to us by the folks behind Early Girl Eatery in downtown Asheville.
My friend Landis at Asheville CVB told me about the newly opened King Daddy’s and I immediately booked a date with her to try it out.
Gluten free people, listen up! Gluten free chicken and waffles. (Do I really need to go on?)
I ordered the straight up fried chicken and Belgian waffle, but my table guests strayed a little with the pumpkin waffles and grilled chicken. We all poured on the syrup and dug in. I cursed a lot. There’s always cursing when the food is good.
The folks at the table beside us were apparently planning on getting lit by the end of lunch, because they ordered a round of BlackJacks (brandy, kirsch, coffee with a lemon twist). If I run away, you can find me in West Asheville. There’s indie art, amazing restaurants (where I’ll beg for a job), and lots of people who drink before noon.
Gluten Free people? Head to Asheville for your next foodie tour, date night, needing a binge eating day, anything. They blow Greenville away when it comes to gluten free, truly. You won’t be sorry.
And for the rest of us? Go get some of those chicken and waffles. And order a drink.
