Let’s talk about the amazing food I’ve been eating this week. First, there was Sunday’s Secret Table Dinner. Yes, I know, I’ve already shouted its praise from the rooftop… or Monday Mashup (same thing), but this free form creme brulee was revolutionary. And to know, that the dish was a one time shot deal? Like a shooting star? I will dream about it for ages.
My new late night hangout fave is Dive ‘n’ Boar in Greenville. The good news is that is is neither a dive or a bore. We are totally in love with their pork belly quesadilla and their onion rings. Best crust on an onion ring ever. The brisket Banh Mi is also the bomb, but needs a little more meat. The drink menu is off the chain. I couldn’t resist the Stonewall Jackson Lost His Arm (black tea-infus’d bourbon, ancho reyes ancho chili liqueur, peach simple syrup, angoustura bitters, orange, and house brandi’d cherries). I had two. You could post up at the bar for a whole week and not make it through their drink menu. They have a regular trivia night and a movie night, too, so if you’re kicking around and looking for something to do, check out their menus and calendar on the Dive ‘n’ Boar website, grab some friends and get your but out there!
Competition Dining is freaking awesome. I’ve been to four of the competitions in Greenville now and one in Winston-Salem, and each night the crowd gets bigger and louder and the dishes are even more incredible. The founder of the Competition Dining Series says it’s a lot like wrestling for chefs, and I have to agree! It is seriously one of those dinners where your friends ask you what you ate and your mouth opens, but just can’t speak. No way you can explain what is going on on that plate, or in your mouth. It’s crazy fun. Check out my video from this week’s Wednesday night competition where Cliff’s Valley Chef Todd Warden and Passerelle Chef Teryi Youngblood battled it out. You’ll have to watch the video to see who won! There are tickets to the remaining bouts still available but you better jump on them. www.competitiondining.com
Crazy, I know, but I have no plans for this weekend yet! My husband bought me an extra screen for my desk! My ADD is totally blissed out right now, so working out kinks on the new blog and playing on social, and simultaneously watching another AWKWARD marathon sounds fabulous after all of the traveling I’ve been doing. I could be talked into hanging out in Travelers Rest on afternoon, though…
A few around town happenings for your calendar:
Don’t forget about the Farmers’ Markets! The downtown Greenville Market and the Travelers Rest Farmers Market are both amazing. We hit both last weekend and came away with quite the haul. Get out there and get those seasonal veggies… and pasta, and cookies, and coffee, and cinnamon rolls… (Writing makes me hungry!)
Mochi Day is going on in Liberty on Saturday for all of you anime fans. (Don’t look at me! My daughter and her friends are obsessed.)
Oh! One more thing! Daniel’s Briar Patch is doing a Pop-Up at the VERY amazing M. Judson Bookstore on Wed. September 16 at 6pm in downtown Greenville. I know all you city people have not made the trek to Marietta, South Carolina to have a taste of their down home Southern cuisine. Mark your calendars. It’s time.
Cheers, ya’ll. Have a great Friday!
