The Fresh Market in Greenville is serving up Root Beer Floats to benefit JDRF Friday, May 29 – Sunday, May 31. Did you know Gap Creek Gourmet is kindof rooted in The Fresh Market? I worked in The Fresh Market meat department during college! I wanted to be a cashier, but there wasn’t an opening when I applied to work there. They handed me an apron and stuck me in the meat department with a bunch of men. I went home every day smelling like a shrimp.
I remember going to the butcher shop with my parents and grandparents when I was a kid. When grocery stores started putting the butchers out of business, they old guys who didn’t retire started working in the meat departments of the grocery stores. I was learning how to cook from these guys who had been taking apart cows and pigs since they were teens. Mind you, we weren’t dismantling full animals in the back of The Fresh Market, but we were doing our fair share of cutting filet, chops and ribeyes. I have a few battles scars (aka, almost cut off fingers) to prove it! My manager, Ray, taught me how to cook all kinds of things with the cuts of meat I wrapped up to take home and try.
The Fresh Market has been serving up Root Beer Floats for JDRF for 21 years now. It was a charity event the whole staff looked forward to every year.
