European sensation Vom Fass has arrived in Greenville. This is actually the first South Carolina location for Vom Fass, a company originating in Germany more than twenty years ago. The newly opened Greenville location features a huge selection of cask aged spirits, oils and vinegars, specialty items and wine. I recently popped in for a few samples, a bottle of wine, and to see what all the buzz was about.
Vom Fass is German, meaning from the cask. The company works directly with farmers and have long-standing relationships with the farms who grow the grapes and olives for their wines, oils and vinegars. Vom Fass staff are often on site to help harvest the fruit and use a patented bag-and-box system to make sure the fruit stays fresh until it’s used to make the tasty selections that line the walls of Vom Fass stores worldwide. That’s what makes this place unique. Well, that and the wall of barrells of aged liquors. I, of course, tried a few of the aged spirits first. You can get 3 to 29 year old scotches here from all over Scotland. I can’t wait to get a few sampler sets for people for Christmas. Liquor is sold in glass bottles by the ounce, much like the oils and vinegars, but they are ready-made. Small casks of all of the oils, vinegars, liquors and spirits line the walls in the shop. You can make your way around tasting from little spoons or glasses. The folks at Vom Fass can tell you everything you would want to know about the product in the store.
After sampling my way around the hard stuff, I moved on to the liquers. I went straight for the Latte Macchiato (such a coffee girl) which would be oh, so good on ice cream or in coffee. I also sampled a lovely purple Violette Liqueur that I was told was an excellent addition to champagne.
The company sent me a sampler basket when they first opened and I immediately fell in love with the Pistachio Oil! It’s delicious when soaked up in fresh hot bread, and would be even more so on a pasta.
If you haven’t checked them out yet, you might want to put that on your calendar. They are Located at 4 Market Point Drive in Greenville, on the backside of Chipotle, sort of facing Whole Foods. I’ve passed it three times recently without noticing it, so keep a sharp eye out.
Vom Fass’s resident chef, Kerrie Ostrander (who I found out is a HUGE Gap Creek Gourmet fan), offers cooking demonstrations with the products there. The store also offers monthly tasting events. I was told there’s a Rum Tasting coming up the first week of December. And don’t worry, they feed you at the tastings too! Reserve your spot for upcoming events by calling (864) 288-3277. To stay up-to-date on all things VOM FASS Greenville, like them on Facebook at facebook.com/vomfassgreenville. Also keep your eyes peeled for Gap Creek Gourmet’s Holiday Gift Guide and 12 Days of Giveaways coming next week! I just might be giving away a Vom Fass Gift Certificate! (wink. wink.)
